TEXTILE CLASSES, Spring 2002
COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS, MENDOCINO COAST

Starting January 18, 2002

Art 62  WEAVING Tuesday and Thursday afternoons  1 to 4:30 pm 
  meets at the Mendocino Art Center, Jennie studio & Weaving studio
  This course covers plain weaves, twills, lace weaves, and  other pattern
weaves for 2 and 4 and more harness looms.  Topics also include
calculations, understanding  yarns and weaving  (threading and dressing
the loom, etc.) materials, equipment,  finishes, pattern drafting, and
design principles relating to weaving. A great introduction for first time
and beginning level students, there is also plenty here for more advanced
students.  Students are encouraged to work on projects and products that
are of interest to them and are introduced to a wide variety of work and
working methods.  Portable / table and frame looms as well as floor looms
(including a 16 Harness AVL computerized Dobby loom) will be used.
Art 62L   WEAVING LAB  only for those who have completed Art 62 twice.
          Concurrent with Art 62 at the Mendocino Art Center

Art 64  FABRIC PRINTING & DYEING Tues. & Thurs. Eve 6 to 9:30 pm
  Rooms 204 & 205 in the Art Dept. on the Fort Bragg Campus
This class is a fast paced comprehensive introduction to many fabric
printing and dyeing processes including fabric painting; block and stencil
printing; resists such as silk paint guttas, tie-dye, clamp dye, and stitch
dye; screen printing and other techniques.  Topics also include the
characteristics and appropriate use of fabrics, dyes, and textile paints. 
Color and design, especially patterning are also addressed.  Fast paced
and fun, this class is a great introduction to surface design on fabric and
allows plenty of room for personal experimentation and individual focus.
